Summary

For the first time ever, goblin sharks—rare, deep-sea creatures with a distinctive and unusual appearance—have been observed alive in their natural deep ocean habitat. Previously, they had only been seen when accidentally caught on fishing lines. Prof Alan Jamieson of the Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Centre notes that these sharks have an almost mythological quality and that scientists know virtually nothing about them, despite their ability to capture the public imagination.
